Known as "The People's Picasso" in his hometown of Salvador, Bel Borba eclectically represents a rarely seen side of Brazil. For 35 years, he has spread his recognized artwork throughout the 500-year-old urban landscape. The sunny coastal city feeds Borba's artistic vein. Combining talent, simplicity, and nature to create original work, he showcases the forgotten beauty of his country and reminds us there is more to Brazil than favelas, soccer, and drug lords in Rio de Janeiro. The true, beautiful essence of Brazil poetically expressed with tiles, steel, sand, and mud, Bel Borba proves the ocean is the limit. For a country already full of color, he engraves his devotion to art and passion for his people. No permission asked.

Mestre Jorge Martins & Grupo Liberdade 2011
_I can't believe it's already here!  Carnaval AZ is going to be EPIC this year with our sister group Sambátuqe coming down from Flagstaff to shake old town Scottsdale's famous Martini Ranch on Friday February 24th starting at 8pm.  We have been working hard to put together and incredible show along with Capoeira Brasil and the beautiful SambAZ Dancers.
This year will feature two rooms and outdoor entertainment, the main groups will bring live performances to the main stage while an all-star DJ lineup will rock the appropriately named "Shaker Room".

_ This is especially unique as it will be a special reunion line-up of the original Batucada DJ Crew with DJ Senbad & Pete "SuperMix" Salaz that started the famous Batucada House parties in Scottsdale & Phoenix that started in the 90's blending deep & soulful house with the sounds of Brasil & beyond at times featuring live musicians.
The extra sweet bit of history is that it was guest drumming at some of these parties that the original drum core and Liberdade crew took shape.  In this way it is with pleasure that
_ we bring back our eclectic desert batucada roots and dance community to celebrate this Carnaval AZ 2012!!
Check out the New Times article here about the last Batucada reunion party that ended up packing Club Cream.

This year we made special arrangements so that traditional Brasilian food will be available by Vals Brasilian Cuisine as well as traditional drinks and specials.

The Carnaval AZ website is up and running with limited discount tickets on sale till the 17th.  This event will sell out, so be sure to get your tickets reserved now. There is some limited VIP seating as well which will go fast.  Contact us for more information and to reserve your table.  Ate mais!!

The New Year is bringing a sweet line-up of shows this January as we are gear up for our cameo appearance at ASU Gammage on the 19th of January as part of their Cultural Participation Series.  If you have children, this show is geared for them.  It will be from 10:00 to 11:30 in the morning with thousands of students being bussed in from schools across the valley.  It will feature our dancers from SambAZ and Capoeira Brasil in an electric theatrical presentation.  At the end there will be a chance for Q & A with students.  If you would like a copy of the study-guide that went out to teachers to share with your children , please download from the link below.

January 20th :: The following night we will then go deep with an evening concert at the ASU Kerr Cultural Center.  You don't want to miss this intimate event  as we will take you on a sonic tour through the roots of Brasilian 'Batucada' and explore the origins of this rich Afro-Brasilian musical tradition.    Please get your tickets early as space is limited!
